The Bishops of the United States have reaffirmed the following reality: "Lifelong catechesis is absolutely necessary for the Christian Formation of the faithful (USCCB, National Directory for Catechesis 3). Each of us can reflect on this for our own personal lives: How do I actively seek to be formed through ongoing catechesis? For us as Catholics, this really isn't an option. And the reason is because the goal of all catechesis is to be drawn into deeper communion with Jesus Christ (cf. St. John Paul II, Catechesi Tradendae 5). Only Jesus can lead us to our Father in heaven (cf. John 14:6).
Please reflect on the following statement from the Congregation for the Clergy in 1971: "catechesis for adults, since it deals with persons who are capable of an adherence that is fully responsible, must be considered the chief form of catechesis. All the other forms, which are indeed always necessary, are in some way oriented to it" (General Catechetical Directory 20, emphasis added).
In life and in our faith we are all life-long learners. Without on-going education, formation and prayer our path to holiness is difficult and unsteady. Promise to nurture your intellect and your soul with readings that educate and inspire you.
"Seek in reading and you will find in meditating; knock in mental prayer and it will be opened to you by contemplation" (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2654).
